Northern Pain Alliance

Building on expertise across the North

Background

During 2016, a group of leading academics across several Northern institutions (led by The University of Sheffield) came together to discuss the establishment of a ‘Northern Pain Alliance’ (NPA) which would build on existing expertise across the North.

The aim of the partnership was to “build on our existing strengths in the field of pain to develop an internationally excellent, multidisciplinary network across the North of England that will enhance the understanding of pain and improve its treatment”.

The partnership initially worked together to develop a MRC Partnership Grant application which was submitted in June 2017.   Despite this application being unsuccessful, feedback received has encouraged the team to explore other funding opportunities and establish the group as a recognised Northern network.

In December 2018, the group reconvened to consider future collaboration opportunities.

The Alliance is supported under the Clinical Academic leadership of Professor Fiona Boissonade and was supported through the NHSA by Head of Research Partnerships, Shirley Hannan.
