The NHSA's CEO has written a response following the Chancellor's Budget announcement

26th November 2025

Hannah Davies, Chief Executive of the Northern Health Science Alliance, said: “We welcome the Chancellor’s firm commitment to health and life sciences research and innovation. Public investment in health research and innovation strengthens both the health and prosperity of our nation, and we were pleased to see the Chancellor recognise this with the promise to invest in health research which aligns with national priorities.

“The North of England is home to a wealth of health research expertise and innovative businesses that, with more investment, could not only boost the economy but also improve health outcomes. Our work has shown that an Institute for Preventative Health Research could bring together the NHSA’s 20 research-intensive NHS hospitals and world-leading universities to undertake research and develop new innovations to deliver the Government’s goal of shifting to a prevention-led health service, and generate a return upwards of £300 million over five years.

“Additionally, we are delighted to see the commitment to supporting regional clusters as a key part of the Government’s strategy. We welcome the creation of a Northern Growth Corridor and the Mayoral Revolving Growth Fund to support it. The NHSA and its members look forward to working with the Government to maximise the growth of the northern health and life sciences cluster.”
