About Us

More about the Northern Health Science Alliance

The Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) is a health and life sciences partnership between the leading NHS trusts and universities in northern England.

We were established in 2011 with a mandate from our member organisations to act, and add value, across research and innovation in the North.  We work together with our members, industry and Government to mobilise the North’s assets for the benefit of the people and the economy. We do this by brokering research collaborations, building expert networks, attracting investment, and providing a unified voice for the region’s health research system.  Our board and council represent the leaders from the North’s top research universities and research intensive teaching hospitals.

Over the financial year (2025-26), we have helped our members to secure a total of £23.5m in research grant funding, from bid submissions to a value of £45.3m with leveraging benefits of the NHSA membership

“After more than two decades working within the NHS across the North of England, I have watched the Northern Health Science Alliance develop into a powerful force for regional collaboration and innovation, and I have seen first-hand the positive impact that research-active hospitals have on patient outcomes. Its impact on health, research and policy has been transformative. I am delighted to join the Board and to contribute to shaping the NHSA’s continued progress and positive influence across the communities we serve.”

“It has been hugely enjoyable watching our health innovation team meet with clinicians – seeing people interact and network is a real joy and something that can only be done properly in this space, and I can we can transform the partnerships made at HLTH into great value. Simply put, we wouldn’t come together this way in any other setting. Clinical settings are extremely high pressure, and staff aren’t in the mindset to address innovation needs. However here the clinicians and teams have freed up time to work together to innovate – a real pleasure to witness.”
