NHSA's Ageing North group celebrates national UN Day of Older Persons

A national day which examines the part older people play in society, follows a roundtable around ageing and productivity at the Labour Party Conference

1st October 2025

Today, (Wednesday October 1, 2025) we celebrate the United Nations Day of Older Persons, which highlights the transformative role older people play in building resilient and equitable societies.

We brought this mission to our Government this week, hosting a roundtable event on ageing and productivity, at The Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.

The roundtable, which included northern MPs alongside representatives from our Ageing North group, examined how joined-up strategies can deliver better health and employment outcomes across the life course, especially through preventative approaches, early interventions, and regional innovation.  The group considered how joined-up strategies can deliver better health and employment outcomes across the life course, especially through preventative approaches, early interventions, and regional innovation.  The event focussed on our Health for Wealth report which shows that productivity is lower in the North, largely due to poorer health outcomes, and ‘Ageing in the North’ report which found that  targeted investment has the potential to reduce or recover as much as £10.9 billion in lost productivity costs, £315 million in NHS costs from falls and hip fractures, and £588 million in NHS costs from treating conditions resulting from poor housing.

This has never been more pressing, as our report with Health Equity North released earlier this year highlighted the range of disadvantages faced by older people living in the North, in areas such as health, life expectancy, housing, nutrition, employment, and social isolation.
