Our CEO Hannah Davies responds to the 2026 Autumn Budget, announced on 28 October, 2026.

“We strongly welcome today’s announcement of a £1 billion private sector investment in life sciences, backed by £70 million of Government support. This sends a powerful message that the UK remains committed to innovation-led growth and recognises the vital role that health research and life sciences play in improving both economic performance and population health.
“The North has world-leading strengths in life sciences, health innovation and biomedical research. Continued investment in these sectors can help attract further private capital, create high-skilled jobs and accelerate the development of innovations that improve health outcomes across the country.
“We are also encouraged by measures to support critical digital infrastructure, including plans for future data centre development. The health sector is becoming increasingly data-driven, and the importance of accurate and qualitative data is key to securing a healthy life sciences system. Investment in the infrastructure that underpins research, innovation and advanced technologies will be crucial to maintaining the UK’s global competitiveness.
“To maximise the benefits of today’s announcements, it is important that investment is focussed on areas which have previously been underserved but also demonstrate the biggest opportunities, including regions with established research excellence and significant opportunities for growth. The North’s universities, NHS organisations and innovation ecosystem are national assets that can help deliver the Government’s ambitions for economic growth, scientific leadership and better health.
“The NHS 10-Year Health Plan rightly places innovation, prevention and tackling inequalities at its heart. Today’s life sciences investment is a positive step towards those ambitions, but long-term success will depend on ensuring that the benefits of innovation are felt by communities across the North and translate into better health outcomes for everyone.”
