Preston

Preston is home to the main campus of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), which offers a range of expertise in health science research and innovation. Key strengths include bioscience, robotics, biomedicine, pharmacology, stroke care and early years. It also boasts a Medical School, Dental School and Clinical Trials Unit.

University of Central Lancashire (UCLan):

UCLan is the home to one of the UK’s newest Medical Schools, and has a growing Clinical Trials Unit. It has a wide range of expertise in health science research and innovation. UCLan’s main campus is in Preston, with a satellite campus in both Burnley, East Lancashire and Westlakes, West Cumbria.
The University has identified Core areas of Research Strength within overarching themes: Arts, Culture and Heritage; Citizenship, Society and Justice; Lifelong Health and Wellbeing; People, Place and Environment; Sustainability, Business and Enterprise; and Transformative Science and Technologies.

Innovation Agency:

The Innovation Agency, Academic Health Science Network for the North West Coast covers Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and South Cumbria, with 4.1 million residents. Its footprint includes 22 NHS providers, 20 CCGs, nine universities and life science industry partners.

Brain Tumour North West:

Involves the Universities of Central Lancashire, Wolverhampton, Manchester Metropolitan, Liverpool and Keele, and together with the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology and Walton Centre NHS Trusts, in a strategic alliance designed to consolidate and exploit clinical and research-based brain tumour expertise which currently exists within the region.

West Cumberland Medical Education Centre:

A research, teaching and medical education facility led by senior clinical academics with a background in acute medicine and primary care in West Cumbria.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust :

Offers a range of high quality specialised services to patients in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust:

A large integrated health care organisation providing high quality acute secondary healthcare for the people of East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust:

An acute hospital trust serving a population of around 320,000 people.

Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust:

Provides over 60 community and mental health services to a population of half a million people.
