Our work around Woman of the North
Women in the North of England live shorter lives, work more hours for less pay, are more likely to be an unpaid carer, and more likely to live in poverty than women in other regions of England.
Damning research – published by our Health Equity North institute – has laid bare the unequal challenges faced by women living in the North of England.
‘Woman of the North: Inequality, health and work’ is an award winning report that finds that women living in the North have lower healthy life expectancy, fewer qualifications, worse mental health, and are more likely to suffer domestic violence or to end up in the criminal justice system than their counterparts in the rest of England. In addition, infant mortality is higher and abortions are more common.
The report was launched in Parliament in September 2024, with keynote speaker Professor Dame Lesley Regan, Women’s Health Ambassador for England (pictured right). We held a Woman of the North Summit in May 2025, supported by the female northern Metro Mayors Kim McGuinness and Tracy Brabin, where we came together with health professionals to discuss how to address the most pressing issues for women in our regions.
